Suicide is a preventable cause of mortality among teachers in Brazil. Understanding this phenomenon is the first step toward its prevention. This research sought to analyze national secondary epidemiological surveillance data from the Ministry of Health's Mortality Information System, known by the acronym SIM in Portuguese, 2020 edition, whose objective is to capture data on deaths in the country in order to provide information on mortality for all levels of the health system. Specifically, this study investigated reports of intentional self-harm deaths by teachers, aiming to shed light on a problem of increasing epidemiological difficulty in solving. This cross-sectional study with a quantitative and descriptive approach analyzed 1,556,824 notifications of deaths from all causes, for the entire Brazilian population, being more frequent in men (55.4%). Death from intentional self-harm, recognized by the SIM system as an external cause (suicide), reached 13,835 occurrences, that is, for every 112 deaths that occur in the country, one is self-inflicted. In Brazil, 2020, there were 13,351 teacher deaths, 142 of which were due to suicide; three each week. Thus, it is necessary to support the development of comprehensive suicides prevention strategies, such as the expansion of access and preventive reception of teaching professionals by workers' mental health care networks, which should become one of the priorities on the global agenda of public health.
