Death in the epic of Gilgamesh: a meaning in front of the versions of the sumerian-akkadian narrative

This article investigates the issue of death throughout the Gilgamesh literary cycle. Starting from the assumption that death gives coherence and meaning to the plot in the face of the different versions of the work, despite the ruptures between the contexts of production over time, the theme is investigated through the historiographical debate about the epic, taking the works by Jean Bottéro, Ciro Cardoso, Tzvi Abush, Andrew George and Jacyntho Brandão, in addition to the analysis of the different versions of the epic. At the same time, supporting and contextualizing the problem, the article presents a history of the debate on the topic of death in the Ancient Near East, in particular, in Mesopotamia
