TESTEX: A TOOL FOR ASSESSING METHODOLOGICAL QUALITY AND REPORTING QUALITY IN PHYSICAL EXERCISE TRAINING STUDIES

Abstract

Assessment of the quality of studies indicates scientific credibility and helps to make a preliminary classification of results, ensuring that studies address the issues and the particularity of the evidence in the best way. Several tools have been proposed in the literature to evaluate clinical trials. However, not all criteria are applicable to physical exercise training studies. In this sense, the objective of this study is to present a Portuguese version of the Tool for the assessment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise (TESTEX) scale, a specific scale in the area of exercise science. In this study, the creation process and common criteria for methodological and reporting quality that make up the scale are presented. TESTEX was designed by experts in the field exclusively for evaluating the quality and reporting of exercise training studies. This is a 15-point scale, which is divided into two blocks: 5 points for the methodological quality of the study and 10 points for the quality of the report. Some of these criteria are: analysis by intention to treat, monitoring of activities in the control group(s), relative intensity of exercise kept constant, characteristics of exercise volume and energy expenditure, etc. The presentation of the TESTEX scale, in the Portuguese version, should serve both researchers, when carrying out clinical trials and systematic reviews, and professionals in the area of exercise science, as support in evaluating studies in their clinical practice.
