Correlation between forgetfulness, memory, some cognitive processes with learning and foreign language learning

Abstract

Our memory is fundamental in the process of learning, holding the subjects we have studied. However, our nervous system has the natural process of forgetting some information. Thus, that research aims to understand how the brain learns, how the memory works in this process, and how it is related with learning a new language and forgetfulness. Moreover, this work aims to show which parts of the nervous system controls the language and then, the process of learning a new language relating them to memory. Besides that, it will also discuss teaching methods and approaches characteristics that can facilitate learning and memorization in the process of learning a new language in order to assist students and teachers in choosing effective teaching methods. For this work to be done, it was necessary reading in the areas of neuroscience, neurolinguistics, language acquisition and teaching, thus, this is a bibliographic research. The present work observed that most of the methods and approaches presented here have characteristics that can benefit the memory, however some much more than others. In addition, part of these benefits depends on the reaction of the students. Therefore, this work uses some authors’ works such as: Mourão and Faria (2010); Souza and Alves (2017); Abrahão (2015) and Kharismawati and Susanto (2014), among others, as a theoretical contribution of the research.
