The Glass slipper's traces: intersemiotic re-readings of Cinderella

Abstract

Literature is an endless source of inspiration for film scripts that are box office success worldwide. The intersemiotic translation, defined by Jakobson as the translation between different signs, is in charge of studying this close and fruitful relationship between book and film. It is analyzed in this article, the Brothers Grimm tale "Cinderella" and three of its readings to films, the eponymous Disney animation, the film Made in Manhattan and Pretty Woman, for that, we will study the Derrida´s concepts of supplement and trace inserted in his theory of Deconstruction. With this analysis, we intend to view the source text elements in those films, noting the links with the precedence that the translators chose to keep or not, and how the features of the story were recreated in their media transpositions, considering that each adaptation is one among the many possible re-readings of a work.
