When we talk about literature and language teachingespecially English language teaching, the difficulties become substantial if we analyze the pandemic situation experienced in recent years. The available resources, the acquisition of printed material and, mainly, the quantity of literary works in English within the school are scarce. Thus, if education works as a way of social transformation based on respect and student autonomy (FREIRE, 2019), it is up to us, teachers, to contribute to the development of the individual. It is in this environment, in an attempt to bring critical discussion on various topics to English classes, that we aim to approach literature in the classroom (CANDIDO, 1995). Based on my experience as a Technical and Technological Education teacher, this work proposes to expose situations and experiences that prove to be effective after exercises with the works The Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, and The Black Cat, by Edgar Allan Poe, based on the need for discussion of living language (BAKHTIN, 2013) in dialogue with other relevant theorists.
