Author Guidelines

Manuscript Style

Define the meaning of abbreviations the first time they are cited in the abstract and text, and again in tables and figures. Once an abbreviation is cited, it must be used throughout the manuscript except at the beginning of a sentence.

Common names of plants, insects, pathogens and animals must be accompanied by the complete scientific nomenclature, including authority, when mentioned for the first time, both in the abstract and in the introduction. Ex. Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.

Percentages must be expressed as whole numbers, for example: 45% instead of 45.4%, 58% instead of 57.5%, 89% instead of 88.9%.

Use the negative power format to note and interrelate units, e.g.: kg ha-1; do not interrelate units using the vertical bar, e.g.: kg/ha.

Check the possibility of eliminating expressions such as: “Influence of...” from the title; “Study on...”; "It is made of..."

Scientific names should be used in titles only when absolutely necessary.

Scholarship status and recognition of the respective funding agencies must be indicated in the “Acknowledgments” subtitle, not on the title page.

Make sure the Summary contains an introductory sentence to the subject and/or identifies the problem you proposed to investigate.

Eliminate from the summary expressions/constructions such as: “It was concluded that...”; “In possession of the results obtained”, “It was possible to observe that...”; “The data shows that…”

Make sure that the Introduction has a maximum of 50 lines, with information about the current state of the art on the subject and the objectives of the work.

Describe in detail the statistical procedures used to analyze the results, preferably at the end of the Material and Methods.

Make sure the results are discussed in detail. Explain cause-effect relationships and compare the results with bibliographic references in the subtitle Results and Discussion.

Eliminate redundant expressions such as “It was observed that...” from the subtitle Results and Discussion; “It should be noted that...”; “It should be noted that...”; “It is important to note that...”; "Checked that..."

In the Conclusion subtitle, do not use phrases such as: “Under the conditions under which the experiment was carried out...”; “For the conditions of this experiment...” etc., and do not use inferences or statements that are mere repetitions of the results.

Make sure that the list of bibliographic references strictly follows the format of the Instructions to Authors.

Use up-to-date bibliographic references for the last five years, but feel free to recognize and use classic references and key, timeless works in the text.

The citation of conference abstracts must be limited to a maximum of 5% of the cited references.

The citation of dissertations and theses is only permitted if the defense took place in the last five years.

Manuscripts must be organized on A4 paper, line spacing 1.5, Arial font size 11.

Titles of tables and figures must be self-explanatory; abbreviations must be detailed in the title or footer of Tables or in the legend of Figures.

Do not insert/use tables with little information; transform the content of these possible tables into body text.

Titles of Tables and Figures must not contain units. Arrange the units in the Tables below the horizontal line that separates the magnitude from the values, or just below the axis titles in the Figures.

Make sure that the International System of Units is used throughout the text, as well as in Figures and Tables.

Check the Greek characters and figures carefully.

Use the negative power format to note and interrelate units, e.g.: kg ha–1; do not interrelate units using the vertical bar, e.g.: kg/ha.

Use a single space between units, e.g.: g L–1 and not g.L–1, or gL–1.

Use the 24-hour time system, with four digits for hours and minutes: 08:00, 17:30.

Make sure that, except when followed by units, numbers from one to ten are written in full (one; two; ...).

Each paragraph must contain a main idea. Short paragraphs should be grouped (eliminate loose sentences); Long paragraphs should be subdivided.

Whenever possible, move/insert bibliographic citations to/at the end of sentences and paragraphs (the subject is more important than the author). Adopt the same procedure in relation to references to Figures and Tables.

Review the entire text before submitting the work; It is suggested that the entire text is precise and clear; The corresponding author must be identified by an asterisk and an institutional email address of the corresponding author must be provided.
