Abstract

This discussion forms part of a
chapter from my Master's degree
thesis, completed at the University
of São Paulo (USP-Brazil) in 2013,
entitled "The Urbanistic expansion
of Syracuse in sixth and fifth
centuries BC." This chapter treats
the question of the various
identities that emerged in the
Greek foundation of Syracuse and
the resistances against the
tyrannical policies. Ducetius was a
symbol of resistance that stood
against the local Greek elites, as a
symbol of non-acceptance of the
population reallocations enforced
by the tyrants (deinomênidas)
since the beginning of the fifth
century BC.
