This article discusses the controversial use of Anglicism in Brazilian Portuguese language, a not recent linguistic phenomenon in Brazilian history, however, relevant for instigating distinctive beliefs of linguists, politicians, writers, scholars in the field, and others. In order to find answers to the raised questions, a bibliographical research was used to perform reading and comprehension texts, summaries, cross-checking information, data analysis and interpretation. Thus, an understanding on researchers’, authors’ and politicians’ beliefs was sought in relation to the addition of the borrowed words/Anglicism in Brazil. The research data was based on theoretical studies of authors, like Justina (2006) and Netto (2007); Fiorin (2001); Possenti (2001); Zilles (2001); Celani (2004); Schmitz (2004); Signorini (2004); Carrion (2009); Lopes (1889); Figueiredo (1938); Mendes (2002); Rajagopalan (2003); Silva (2009), having as reference the conceptual categories – borrowed words and linguistic phenomena, protection and use of the Portuguese language, beliefs on disapproval and defense of Anglicism. The issue is fundamental to the understanding of historical and current events that involve the English and Brazilian Portuguese languages. It was observed that there are some people who support the Portuguese Language purity and disapprove the use of Anglicism, and there are those who claim the impossibility of its purity and notice the linguistic phenomenon Anglicism as something peculiar to the process of language change. For some people, the effective presence of Anglicism in our language represents opulence and evolution not only to the language, but also to the nation technological development. There are those who recommend caution and consider a form of nationalism, the development and the proposal of a Bill to discuss the topic whose authors’ justification attempt to the Portuguese language changes. This study provides reflection on Anglicism in several Brazilian areas, such as: economy, sport, politics, culture and others.
