Abstract

This text is a transcription of the speeches given at the table “Aesthetics of Writing and the Image of its time” at the Bahian Meeting of Philosophy, Image and Cinema, which took place on September 14, 2023. On the occasion, we invited xs Baiano writers Luciany Aparecida and Hamilton Borges to think about literature as an instrument for capturing social images.

The event was formally supported by Anãnsi, UNEB's philosophy journal, the Pedro Calmon Foundation and the Bahia Cultural Foundation, both submitted to the Secretariat of Culture of the State of Bahia. The activity was mediated by Prof. Esp. Flávio Rocha de Deus (UFBA) and its English version was translated by Prof. Dr. Otávio Maciel (UnDF)

Author Biographies

Luciany Aparecida, Universidade Federal da Paraíba

Born in Vale do Jiquiriça, southwest of Bahia, Luciany is a writer and has a doctorate in literature with research in the areas of literature and culture. His current studies think about literature at the interface: performance, oral language, memory, history, immigration, identities and nation. She is the author of Mata Doce (2023), Macala (2022) and Joanna Mina (2021). With the signature Ruth Ducaso published: Florim (2020) and Contos ordinários de melancolia (2017).

Hamilton Borges, Instituto Quilombo Xis

Born and raised at Rua do Curuzu, 294, in the Liberdade neighborhood, he currently lives in Engenho Velho de Brotas (Salvador, Bahia, Brazil). He created and is part of the political organization React or you will be killed, React or you will be killed and works at the Winnie Mandela Pan-Africanist School with its lines of action that involve literature, political formation and community cultural action. He is the founder, together with Andreia Beatriz, of Livraria Agba Eleye and Reaja Editora. He coordinates the Intramuros Culture Project at Lemos Brito Penitentiary where he develops cultural policy actions and fights for the rights of male and female prisoners. Author of Teoria Geral do Fracasso (2017), Salvador, cidade túmulo (2018), O Livro Preto de Ariel (2020) Libido, Dendê e Melanina (2022) and Bantu Machine (2023).
