Philosopher Xun’s method of discussing and explaining
contributions to philosophical writing from a Chinese starting point
Abstract
I briefly reflected on the method of discussing and explaining by the philosopher Xun, based on the direct translation from ancient Chinese of the passage in which this author explains it. In addition, I carried out a method of structural reading of his work that would clarify the author's own perspective. I also made connections with current topics in philosophical writing, contemporary epistemology, and cognitive psychology. I conclude that we can learn four steps or lessons to deliver a speech: (1) present it with care, vigor and honesty; (2) make distinctions aimed at understanding; (3) make analogies, metaphors and examples that establish relationships; (4) demonstrate the relevance of discourse using both rationally and affectively.
