Identity, identification and differentiation in contemporary brazilian comedies

Abstract

We explore how Deleuze’s notion of the ‘powers of the false’, from Cinema 2, enables a consideration of the ways in which national identity is negotiated in two popular Brazilian comedies of the 2000s, Se Eu Fosse Você/If I Were You (2006) and Se Eu Fosse Você 2/If I Were You 2 (2009). The films offer possibilities for various Brazilian audiences to reimagine national identities “against the grain” of a movement-image blockbuster with an apparently homogenising white, middle class, nuclear family-oriented, normative image of national identity.  Studying the aesthetics of these artistic productions, understanding their implications for people and for world representations as structured by the look and its narrative, we found contributions to cultural identities discussions on curriculum studies.

Antonio Carlos Rodrigues de Amorim, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Graduado em Biologia (Universidade Federal de Viçosa), Mestrado e Doutorado em Educação (Universidade Estadual de Campinas) e Pós-doutorado em Mídia e Comunicação (Goldsmiths College, University of London). É professor no Departamento de Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte e pesquisador do Laboratório de Estudos Audiovisuais OLHO e do Laboratório de Estudos Avançados em Jornalismo - LABJOR, na Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Tem experiência de pesquisa na área de educação, com ênfase nas relações entre currículo e culturas audiovisuais e na área de divulgação científica e cultural.

David Martin-Jones, University of Glasgow

Professor of Film Studies, University of Glasgow. His research engages with what it means to study a world of cinemas. He is the author of several books, including Deleuze and World Cinemas (2011) (shortlisted for the BAFTSS Annual Book Award), has published in numerous journals (including Cinema Journal, Screen and Third Text), and co-edits the online resource deleuzecinema.com and the Bloomsbury monograph series Thinking Cinema.
