Abstract

This paper attempts to establish a link between the literatures of Brazil and China during the beginning of the 1920s. It argues that China has a set of features comparable to those of the Brazilian Modernism. While acknowledging their specific differences, Brazil and China were part of the periphery In the world literary system during the period In question. Based on a case study of Lu Xun’s The Cry, this article advances the thesis that, first, like Brazilian Modernism, China received foreign Influences, albeit through a different lineage and Intermediation. Secondly, the “National Issue” and Regionalism had a seminal role In both literatures, according to their specificities. Finally, certain modern Institutions were In the center of the debate and the creation of literature In both countries, for Instance literary magazines and language reform/popularization.
