In recent times, the phenomenon of populism in Europe has had a significant expression in the face of migratory flows of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East, who are fleeing from war and in search of security and better living conditions. The rise of radical parties of the extreme right, with their strongly nationalist, traditionalist and xenophobic discourses, has been a real challenge for the Christian churches here in Western Europe. They have sometimes been exploited by populism, but they have also been real faces of hospitality, solidarity and peace, something that is one of the cornerstones of the current European Union.
