Abstract

This article aims to study the society presented in the book The Great Gatsby (1925), by F. Scott Fitzgerald through his narrative we find a critique of the society of his time, we can associate it to the current times, thereby, We discuss these questions by analyzing the characters and the most diverse and relevant situations that clarify our assumptions about the society that F. Scott Fitzgerald presents us. We will address these questions by linking to other works of literature that have this view of society, for instance, Madame Bovary written by Gustave Flaubert and discuss the society features that appear in the narratives according to Georg Lukács (1971) and Antonio Candido (2010) in order to better understand these issues. We also will address the lifestyle that the main character, Jay Gatsby, lives and we will conjecture its causes, discuss the issues surrounding his death and the existing paradox between his death and his funeral.
