Proverbs: translation and learning in foreign language class

Abstract

This article aims to identify strategies used by learners of foreign languages to translate proverbs in their mother tongue and to identify the advantages of such strategies to develop communicative competency in the target language. Data comprises translations of Shona proverbs into Portuguese and German. Theories on the impact of previous linguistic knowledge, the intercultural approach and pedagogical translation enlighten this study. The study, based on qualitative and quantitative approaches, reveals that paraphrase, word-for-word translation and the use of equivalent proverbs are the strategies used by our target group, and the first two are of preferential use. However, difficulties to use equivalent proverbs and the use of word-for-word translation must be lessened to promote development of communicative competency in foreign language.
