Introduction: Brazil is the nation where the highest rates of individuals carrying the HTVL virus are found in absolute numbers. So far, four virus subtypes are known, being HTLV type 1 and type 2 the most significant in relation to epidemiology and pathogenesis. On a global scale, HTLV-1 is the main responsible for human infections and is closely related to the occurrence of several diseases. Methods: Observational epidemiologic and retrospective study, performed in the state of Bahia (Brazil), from where all notifications of HTLV cases between 2010 and 2019 were documented, as shown at Information System on Diseases of Compulsory Declaration (SINAN). Results: In the last 5 years had seen an increase in the number of reported cases, with the highest prevalence being in the city of Salvador. Statistics show that, from 3452 cases registered of all subtypes of infection caused by HTLV in this period, 75.6% were from females, 44.6% from people with African descent and 32,4% of cases in people aged 20 to 34 years old. It is important to note that only 49.7% of the diagnostics/cases were confirmed by the laboratory testing methods. Discussion: Bahia has the highest rate of infection of HTLV virus in Brazil, being female, African descent, and young adults the group that have more prevalence of virus. Furthermore, there is an expressive number of ignored/blank which points to a need of major improvements in public policies, healthcare, populations management.
