Cultural Comparisons Between Chinese New Year and Western Christmas

Festivals are days of the year that are given special sociocultural significance and are Interspersed between daily routines; they are a concentrated display of people’s colorful lives and a summary and extension of the politics, economy, culture, and religion of various regions, ethnic groups, and countries. China is a country with a vast territory and many ethnic groups and has produced numerous festivals throughout its history. Chinese New Year is one of them. Chinese New Year is a national festival that is clearly representative of contemporary Chinese society. In contrast, Christmas In the West is different. Christmas In the West is self-centered, exalts Individuality, and shows more Interactivity, crowd participation, and passionate carnival emotions from people. This paper mainly focuses on the origins of the traditional festival Chinese New Year and Western Christmas and analyzes the similarities and differences between the two festivals In aspects of festival elements, festival customs, festival cultural connotations, and festival functions, as well as reveals the reasons for such differences, In order to help us better achieve cross-cultural communication.
