This paper highlights two different perspectives on marriage. Through a comparative study of short stories, "Eveline", written by the Irish writer James Joyce and "A Fuga", written by the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector will be described and analyzed which factors influence the positioning of the characters, describing marriage as a way to freedom, while another character perceives marriage as a prison. The way each dealt with the idea of marriage, or which had meaning for each of them will also be described. Also will analyze the place in society that these women occupied from the perspectives of writers who have made studies about the position of women in society, specifically in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, as Margaret Rago. Ideologies, cultures and feelings, like fear, are present in both stories and these characteristics can be compared and studied from the psychoanalyst Eric Fromm about the fear of being free. Relying on the book "O medo à liberdade", this same author, one can realize that such disturbance or uneasiness felt by the characters are from cultural perceptions about the society of that time, such as religion, social position and community in which women are presented.
