This work intends to study the frequency and use of German modal particles (henceforth MPs) doch and wohl in written journalistic media genre. German Modal Particles are linguistic elements that pose severe difficulties for the translation and teaching in the German/Portuguese language pair. A couple of the major reasons for such hindrance are: i) the function of the MPs is context-dependent; ii) there are no direct counterparts for MPs in Portuguese. In order to offer tools for the compilation and presentation of data about the frequency of PMs in written media we use the WordSmith Tools software to treat a corpus composed of 76 articles (comprising 32,539 words) taken from the following online newspapers: Bild, Deutsche Welle, Focus, Huffington, Spiegel, Yahoo and Zeit. The sentences and contexts containing PMs found in the corpus can be used as relevant tools to teach German as a foreign language. Therefore, the results provide information on the frequency of these elements in written corpora, evidencing their relevance in this genre. Corpora investigations involving pragmatics aspects are relevant both to translation studies as well as to language teaching since it may shed light on the understanding about the use and meaning of complex elements, such as MPs.
