Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the convergence and divergence between Muntuism and personhood with regard to the necessary and sufficient characteristics in the identification of a person. It is defended by Muntuism, that the person, the community and God constitute the fundamental characteristics of the person or muntu in Africa, contrary to personhood, which accepts to be a person, from a reductionist basis, that is, the person is defined in a metaphysical and ethical vision. With this, a study of the two currents is made and with the help of a very qualitative methodology, since some philosophers, both African and American, are chosen in order to complement and enrich the dialogue and discussion on the notions of man and person in philosophy.
