Abstract

This article aims to analyze the performance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in South Africa - an alternative model of conflict resolution indicated for societies in political transition processes. In South Africa, the end of apartheid was a negotiated political commitment, with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission being one of the instruments that led to peaceful negotiation. Thus, we seek to defend that in states where socialization has been authoritatively segregated, however complete the proposed solutions may be, it is the socio-political context that will determine their effectiveness. In South Africa, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, structured on the bias of restorative justice, did not heal the deep wounds of apartheid, but contributed to building the fundamental: peace.
