THE PERCEPTION OF OBSTETRIC VIOLENCE BY BLACK WOMEN IN A USF IN SALVADOR-BAHIA AND THE IMPACTS OBSERVED

Introduction: Faced with the obstetric racism observed in our society, this work sought to understand the perception and impacts of obstetric violence on black women. Methodology: This is an exploratory study with a quantitative-qualitative approach with women in a Family Health Unit in Salvador-BA. Two stages were carried out: Application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, about the care received in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle, then a semi-structured interview with those self-declared black women. Simple frequencies were constructed by correlating the data with the race/color item in step one, while the data from step two were analyzed using Minayo's Theory of Discourse Analysis. Results/Discussion: 20 women participated, 17(85%) black and 3(15%) non-black. Age varied between 18-25 years, average income ≤one minimum wage, and delivery in public maternity hospitals. With the data analysis, three categories of discussion were created: The faces of obstetric violence, Recognizing obstetric racism and The impacts of violence. The participants were able to perceive the practice of obstetric violence in the services, correlating it to their race/color and social condition, resulting in the desire not to get pregnant again and exposing them to postpartum depression. Conclusion: The research demonstrated the need to improve care in maternity hospitals. The findings suggest the need for greater training of teams regarding racism and the for minimal intervention in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle, with the exercise of equity and understanding of how intersectionalities act in the black female body, in addition to greater education of women about their rights to who fight to secure them.
