Abstract

The article seeks to discuss the characters’ identity formations in the short story “Faith”, by Sayaka Murata, in order to demonstrate an emulation of the functioning of paranoia both in the complex identity process and in the structure of the story itself and, metonymically, in the mechanisms themselves in possible analysis, when accepting explanation as an unveiling of reality. At the same time, the article seeks to demonstrate how formations of new communities within the short story can be indications of reading other formulations for critical versions of exceptionality theses of what it means to be Japanese, from the moment in which one encounters, in the narrative, a form of violence emerging, without prior movement of the subjects present there, as an event demarcating a linguistic separation, splitting the very equalization of nativity from the spatiotemporal and linguistic location of the subjects involved.
