Notes about the black presence at the Folklore Museum of São José dos Campos/SP

Abstract

Driven by the educational work at the Folklore Museum between 2012 and 2013 and by the experiences in the black movement in Viçosa, MG, this article is the result of research carried out within the scope of the lato sensu specialization of the Candido Mendes University - History of Africa and the Negro in Brazil - in 2013. It was intended to reflect on the Santos de Fé Room of the Museum's long-term exhibition and on how the educators of that institution should prepare for mediations in this Room - in view of the Museum's mission. The methodology used was an analysis of the exhibition support texts produced by the curator Raul Lody; video presentation of the exhibition by the same; observation of the Room; and bibliographical discussion. On the one hand, the room's narrative refers to African influences on religiosity in Brazil in order to contribute to the formation of citizenship by its visitors; on the other hand, the professionals who mediate the visits need to know this narrative deeply to create strategies to assist and combat racism. What we intend to demonstrate is that the valorization of the Afro-Brazilian heritage and the fight against racism are in accordance with the curatorship of the exhibition and the narrative of the Sala Santos de Fé, but that the Folklore Museum needs strong training from its educators on the theme and better positioning on the issue of black identity.
