The path to the critique of whiteness

Abstract

This article aims to bring to light the process of building critical thinking on whiteness in the production of a doctoral thesis at the Psychology Institute at the University of São Paulo, seeking to record the crossroads and paths that appeared. The research with a broader focus sought to use an ethnographic perspective, relying on various materials: field observations, interviews and critical analysis of a literary text, having as its theme the interracial relationship in black cultural territories. The contact with authors from the social psychology of racism, cultural studies and a certain Brazilian sociology that thematizes Brazilian racism was the way to arrive at the concept of whiteness. Whiteness is understood as the social identity that offers material and symbolic privileges to whites in societies structured on racial inequality. Considering the discussion about the invisibility and visibility of this social identity for whites, an attempt was made to highlight the racist strategies to support the privileges of whiteness in the analysis of interracial coexistence in black cultural territories. The observations about the path lived in the research and field observations, but especially from the analysis of the short story by Albert Camus and the reading made by Alfredo Bosi about this work, pointed out how the social and cultural interaction of whites with blacks in cultural territories Black can make even more invisible the forms of exercising whiteness and sustaining the privileges of whites, not necessarily causing their involvement in the anti-racist struggle. It seeks to indicate how the dimension of racial inequalities posed by colonialism did not appear in the literary criticism produced by Alfredo Bosi, thus ratifying the conclusions made by Priscila Silva (2015) about the maintenance of the whitening project and the erasure of racial issues, being the hierarchization racially translated into cultural terms.
