THE (IM)POLITENESS IN THE SPEECHES PRESENT IN COMMENTS OF THE NEWS “FOME, MAIS UMA VERGONHA NACIONAL”, BY FOLHA DE S. PAULO

Abstract

When interaction occurs, either face-to-face or virtually, the speaker makes use of strategies to express his ideas; some strategies are polite, others impolite, this will depend on the speaker's intentionality. With the advent of the Internet and, consequently, the interaction in virtual environments, there is a great use of impoliteness in virtual discourses. Thus, this article aims to analyze the use of politeness and impoliteness present in the speeches present in comments on a news item in the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper. For such analysis, Leech (2005) will be used as a theoretical framework to deal with the pragmatic rules of linguistic politeness. For impoliteness, the positive and negative impoliteness strategies presented by Culpeper (1996) will be used, for the understanding of discourse, Fairclough (trans. 2001, 2003); some considerations will also be made using the politeness perspective of Brown and Levinson (1987). The corpus is composed of 12 comments present in the news “Fome, mais uma vergonha nacional” published in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo on July 4, 2022. As a result, uses of both politeness and impoliteness strategies were observed, with the use of of impoliteness more present when the speaker was divergent to the news or to another comment. Regarding the discourses present in the texts under analysis, negationist, political and naturalization discourses were noticed, especially in comments that used impoliteness.
